A-trak circa 2004

I was going through some old photos last night and found some shots of A-trak I took back in 2004. Looking through my old photos inspired me to try harder to take more than I have been. These memories are valuable.

This past weekend some friends and I took a road trip down to LA for HARD. Here are a couple videos from the event. Sorry for the distortion, my little Flip camera can’t handle the volume.

Summer Minimix

Here is a little minimix I put together while working on a set I played a couple weeks ago. It’s just barely over ten minutes long but packed full of bangers.

Tokyo Train Station

At the beginning of this month I left Shanghai for Tokyo for a nine day adventure with my friend Eli Smith of So Sweet Records. Tokyo was the last stop on his tour through Asia and Australia and he invited me to DJ at show with him at a club called Trump Room. I had never been to Japan so obviously I jumped at the chance.

The trip ended up being lots of long days and long nights. Trying to fit in as much of what Tokyo has to offer in eight nights/nine days can prove to be exhausting. One of my favorite things we did was spending a day at Oedo Onsen in Obaiba (wikipedia link for those of you who don’t know what an onsen is).

Big thanks to Tomo of So Sweet Japan for letting us crash in your tiny little apartment!

Above is a video from the show at Trump Room. I will post more as they are uploaded. Check out more photos on Flickr.

Photos by Sam of Jellymon - See more

Lately I have felt a bit overwhelmed with work, DJing, travel,  friends in town among other things. I returned late last night from Beijing where I was playing at a festival called Zoo. Also playing was Drop the Lime and Classixx who are all really cool guys. My friend Eli Smith had also just gotten into town from L.A. before we headed directly to the train station to go to Beijing. He played the first stop of his tour and will be playing this Friday in Shanghai before heading to Japan. I also met up with a bunch of close friends in Beijing so needless to say it was a really fun weekend.

Swatch Battle

It has been raining on and off for about a week now in Shanghai, but that wasn’t able to stop a massive crowd from showing up to Badtastic on Saturday night. The party was a blast and in accordance with the theme there was lots of good music and bad mixing. I would have to say Jenn Wong (Wongton) and Sam (Samwhich) tied for the worst mixing. That sounds like a negative thing, but it’s actually the highest of achievements at Badtastic.

Edit: For photos of Badtastic visit the Flickr pool.

On both Saturday and Sunday I DJed an event put on by MTV China and Swatch. The concept of the event was to have local artists/illustrators/painters “battle” in front of a live crowd. Each artist was allowed one hour and a half to create their peice, and I was really impressed with the artwork in the end. It was cool to see what some of the local kids are doing here in Shanghai as far as art goes.

(Sorry about the poor quality on the photos. Low light + iPhone camera.)

Antidote 7/30/2009

I am DJing tonight for the one and only Antidote party here in Shanghai. To my knowledge this is probably the longest running party in Shanghai. I am always excited to be a part of their events (even if they do write my name incorrectly on the flyer).

DJing Cut&Paste

Just a quick rundown of the good times that took place over the past weekend. The weekend started early on Thursday when Ratatat played their first show in Shanghai. Packed venue and a good show. Even though I would be willing to bet that 75% of the people there had never heard a single song of theirs they still seemed to be into it.

Friday I went to the The Seagull Lao KeLe exhibition presented by Jellymon. The show’s very was really great and had some interesting work done by local photographers. The night after that consisted of drinks, late night noodle session featuring the best hand pulled noodles ever and then a LOST marathon.

Saturday I DJed the Cut&Paste contest. I must say it was probably the longest set I have ever played totalling in about 5.5 hours of music. The back was aching and by the end I was ready to be done. It was good though, and cool to see a different crowd of local designers. The competitors were nearly all local and I would have to say I was more impressed with their work than the competitors I saw in LA. Much thanks to Panthea Lee for setting up that gig for me. After the Cut&Paste event I met up with Li who had just made her 17 hour flight back to Shanghai from Stockholm. We met up with Sammy at his place for a chill night and somehow ended up at karaoke until 7am.

Good, good times were had. By far the best weekend I have had since being back in Shanghai.

Cut&Paste Shanghai

Tomorrow I will be DJing for Shanghai’s first Cut&Paste design competition. Being a much more experienced designer than DJ it’s kind of funny that my first experience being involved with Cut&Paste would be DJing. But regardless it should be fun.
